The Wanderer’s Story

Back in the day, there was a little boy who loved adventure and dreamed of floating in the clouds. He had a loyal canine companion named Alfie who was always by his side. One day, the boy had an idea to build a hot air balloon out this and that and set to work. After quite some time of tinkering and building, the boy got dressed in his best outfit and climb into the ship with Alfi. He lifted off and they began to rise, up, up into the bright blue sky. They soared over green fields and forests, feeling the wind on their faces and the sun on their backs. Alfie barked happily and wagged his tail because he too was thrilled by their sky-high adventure. Together, they explored the wide-open sky and enjoyed each other’s company, feeling free and happy in their little hot air balloon.

Parts & how he was made

The wanderer is an antique porcelain doll. Most of his paint had long worn off, so I repainted most of him and brought him back to life! His pal Alfie is a vintage porcelain dog stamped JAPAN.

The airship is a vintage Indian silver plated teapot. It was pretty beat up and the lid had been ripped off. After some cleaning & repairs it was almost ready for flight. It needed a “basket” for the travelers so I glued in a vintage jello mold and in order for the boy and dog to sit right, I had to add a level of Apoxy clay to the bottom which I painted to match. The copper flags or bunting was cut out of copper sheeting and filed down. Then I added a bit of ribbon around the lip to cover up where the lid had been so cruelly ripped off. The antique clock parts are a fun touch on each side. The red flags are also copper that I painted for fun.

The “rope” from the airship to the “balloon” are copper rods that I soldered to the copper toilet float (balloon). On the balloon I added silver bunting or flags cut out of an old soda can, covered with aluminum tape that attached it to copper wire. It’s a sturdy, but lightweight adorable piece!
