Sky Safari is a unique mixed-media sculpture that was a labor of love for me. I transformed a heavy silver-plated gravy boat into an airship, requiring a lot of hard work to remove the base and handles. I filled the interior with Apoxie clay before painting it a beautiful deep blue to resemble a night sky, complete with glitter glass for stars. The animals were secured in resin, and I added toy wheels to the bottom for an added touch of whimsy.
The angel was a broken vintage porcelain doll that I attached with wire and adhesive, then added wings and painted them gold. I attached the balloon by soldering brass rods onto it and sinking them into the resin. The animals are thrift store pieces that I painted and aged to resemble old brass, and I added various found objects like propellers, wings, and antique clock parts for an extra element of fun.
The Sky Safari Story
Once upon a time, in a dense jungle, animals were facing a severe drought and there was hardly any food left for them to survive. They were very hungry and afraid. One day an angel saw the plight of the animals and said “come with me”, and they did, they got in in her magical airship and flew in a dreamy state to safety. The animals were overjoyed to see their new home, which had plenty of food, water, and shelter. From that day on, the animals lived happily in their new home, safe and sound, all thanks to their angel. Be the angel. Be the change. We can all do our part to combat climate change.
