Parts & How it Was Made
It began with me getting out my Dremel to fix some things on Scotty, as well as some clay work to fix his ears. Then a couple of coats of metallic silver before aging, embellishing, etc. just the dog head. For some reason, he had to have a propeller! Maybe it was because my own little mini schnauzer was spinning around at my feet in my studio.
The head is mounted on an antique post newel, a great find from my favorite architectural salvage place. There was a gap around where the dog’s head met the wood piece so I created little discs from Apoxy clay and applied them all around. The wood piece is mounted to a cast aluminum gear and somehow just didn’t seem finished. Then while rummaging around in my garage junk pile I remembered this vintage nut box that was a souvenir piece from about 1947 in the Redwood forest. YES – it’s a redwood nut box! I left the label on the bottom and sealed it. Fabulous! So I cleaned it up and screwed the top to the bottom of the post newel and I LEFT IT A BOX! Surprise! It’s also a hidey hole. I just love it! I hope you do to.
